Photography Bio

Brett Darrington Photographer

Born a child of the sixties into a family of artists. My father and mother were musicians, great voices who guided me to pursue my dreams however diminutive or grandiose with sensitivity and passion. Most of my five brothers and sisters followed in our parent’s artistic model. Whether ceramics, photography, music, dance or writing, “art” was a vibrant, expressive part of our lives as children. Our house was filled with the voices of numerous choral rehearsals my father their conductor. My father also directed plays and musical theater. In college I was honored to be president of an elite touring choir. The same post held by my father years before.During the 70’s in high school and college my eldest brother was my mentor, a very talented ceramist and photographer. All four high school years were made interesting by my participation in ROP photography and photo journalism. My high school photography instructor Jim Gardner was a huge catalyst in propelling my photography career. I lived in the dark room 3-4 hours every day. My eldest brother and I built a darkroom in my parent’s home. In those days it was all silver based film and photographic papers. Dodging and burning were “physical” procedures performed while enlarging in the darkroom. I hazard to think of all the time my hands have been in photographic chemicals like developer, stop bath, fixer, and clearing agent.Small time awards at the county fair filled my artistic sails, I changed tacks and entered the world of digital photography. In 2002 I purchased my first Canon digital camera. My excitement for photography exploded all over again. My career was also developing as a Mechanical Designer. The technical aspects of photography intrigued me. Before I designed in CAD, I hand drew (drafted) all of my designs on paper and Mylar. My briefcase full of drafting tools collects dust in my garage as computer-aided design replaced them. The lessons of perspective inherent in projection and isometric drawings taught me lessons useful in photography. The exactness of engineering taught me to always focus on the smallest details, and that perspective is everything. As my career changed so did my appetite for travel. Currently my photography is travel landscape and portraiture. Traveling through South, Central, and North America, Asia and Europe I have attuned my eyes to the subtlety of light. A day with my camera in a new, beautiful location stirs my senses like nothing else. All of my photographs are printed on archival papers, with 180-200 year archival quality inks. Framed and signed with certificates of authenticity. Brett Darrington, Photographer
